Steel manual

Steel is an alloy of iron with carbon (up to 2 %)
According to the chemical structure, steel is divided into carbonic and alloyed .
According to quality into commercial quality, quality, refining quality and high-quality steel.

Influence of alloying elements:

Nickel imparts to steel corrosion resistance, high durability and ductility, increases hardenability, raises impact resistance.

Wolfram generates in steel very firm compounds as carbides sharply increasing hardness and red-hardness of steel. Wolfram inhibits the grain growth at heating, promotes elimination of tempering fragility.

Vanadium raises hardness and durability, refines grain. Increases steel density.

Silicon in quantity more than 1 % renders the special influences on steel properties: the content 1-1.5 % of Si increases durability though viscosity is saved. At the greater content of silicon electrical resistance and magnetic permeability are increased. The silicon increases also elasticity and oxidation resistance.

Manganese At the content more than 1 % increases hardness, wear resistance, shock load resistance without reducing plasticity.

С obalt raises heat-resistance, magnetic properties, increases impact resistance.

Molybdenum increases red-hardness, springing, tensile strength, corrosion and oxidation resistance at high temperature.

Titanium raises steel durability and density, promotes grain refinement, improves workability and corrosion resistance.

Niobium improves acid resistance and promotes reduction of corrosion in weldment.

Aluminium raises heat and oxidation resistance.

Copper increases corrosion resistance.

Cerium raises durability and plasticity.

Zirconium allows to receive steel with the beforehand specified granularity.

Lanthanum, cerium and neodymium reduce porosity, promote reduction of the sulfur content in steel, improve surface condition, refine grain.

According to degree of alloying alloy steel is subdivided into low alloy (alloy elements up to 2,5 %), medium-alloy (from 2,5 up to 10 %), high-alloy (from 10 up to 50 %). High-alloy are:

* corrosion resistant steel and alloy combinations having electrochemical and chemical corrosion resistance; intergranular corrosion, stress corrosion resistance etc.;

* heat-resistant (oxidation resistant) steel and alloy combinations having chemical corrosion resistance in gas environment at temperature higher than 50° С , working in unladen and low loaded condition;

* heat-resistant steel and alloy combinations working in loaded condition at high temperature during fixed-time and having sufficient heat resistance.

Steel grades

Commercial quality carbon steel State Standard 380-94.

A pplication area .

Commercial quality carbon steel is intended for hot-rolled manufacturing: profiled, shaped, thick sheet, thin sheet, broadband and cold-rolled thin sheet: ingots, blooms, slabs, billets, rolled and casted blanks, tubing, forging and press forming, strips, wire, hardware etc.

Classification .

Commercial quality carbon steel is made of the following grades : Ст0, Ст1кп, Ст1пс, Ст1сп, Ст2кп, Ст2пс, Ст2сп, Ст3кп, Ст3пс, Ст3сп, Ст3Гпс, Ст3Гсп, Ст4кп, Ст4пс, Ст4сп, Ст5пс, Ст5сп, Ст5Гпс, Ст6пс, Ст6сп.

The letters Ст designate steel.

Figures 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 - conditional grade number depending on chemical composition. The increase of number means increasing of the carbon contents and strength.

The degree of steel deoxidation is specified by the letters after figures: кп - boiling; пс - halftranquil; СП - quiet.

Carbon constructional quality steel State Standard 1050-88.

General specifications.

Application area.

The standard establishes general specifications for hot-rolled and forged profiled carbon constructional quality steel of the grades 08, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 58 and 60 mm diameter or thickness up to 250 mm and gaged rolled steel with special conditioning of all grades.

In a part of chemical composition norms the standard expands to other kinds of rolled steel, ingots, forging, stamping from steel of the grades which are listed above, and from steel grades 05 кп , 08 кп , 08 пс , 10 кп , 10 пс , 11 кп , 15 кп , 15 пс , 18 кп , 20 кп and 20 пс .

Classification.

Designation of two first figures: 08, 10, 15, 20 etc. up to 60. They show the average carbon content in the 100-th shares of percent. The letters кп and пс after figures correspond boiling and halftranquil steel.

Surface quality:

1 ГП - hot upset (test)

2 ГП - for hot pressure processing

3 ГП - for cold machining

Mechanical properties:

М 1 - in standardized condition

М 2 - hard-drawn or standardized mechanical properties

М 3 - with standardized mechanical properties

ТО - annealed , high tempered

Hardness:

ТВ 1 - without heat treatment

ТВ 2 - standardized hardness

ТВ 3 - hard-drawn rolled metal

Designation.

First two figures specify the average carbon content in the 100-th shares of percent. The letters after figures specify presence of alloying elements, and the figures after the letters designate the content of alloying elements in percentage (35 Г 2, 30 Х 2)

If the content of alloying elements is less than 1,5 %, figure is absent (50 Х , 15 ХР ).

Classification.

According to State Standard 4543-79:

The letter A at the end of grade designations specifies high-quality steel (15 ХА , 20 ХН 3 А )

The letter Ш – extra quality steel

Groups of surface quality:

1 - hot upset

2 - hot forming

3 - for machining

According to material condition:

Without heat treatment

Tempered - Т

Hard-drawn - Н

Carbon tool steel State Standard 1435-74.

Designation. By the letter У and figures showing the average carbon content in the tenth shares of percent ( У 7, У 10), the letter A after figures designates high-quality steel ( У 8 А ).

Alloy tool steel State Standard 5950-73.

Designation. The first figures specify the average carbon content in the tenth shares of percent if it is more than 0,1 % (9 Х 1, 9 ХС ). Figures standing after the letters, designates alloying element and its average percent content ( Х 12, 8 Х 3). Constructional steel with raised and high cutability State Standard 1414-75 . Designation. By the letter A and figures showing the average carbon content in the 100-th shares of percent ( А 12)

Bearing steel State Standard 801-78.

Designation. By the letters ШХ and figures showing the chromium content in the tenth shares of percent. The letters after figures show presence of additional alloying elements 9 ШХ 15 СГ
